The Islamic State has been responsible for the deadly attack on a hospital in the Afghan capital Kabul, which killed at least 25 people and injured a dozen others on Tuesday. The attack was carried out by armed gunmen and at least one suicide bomber. The terrorists’ target was the 400-bed Sardar Mohammad Daud Khan Military Hospital, one of the wealthier neighbourhoods of Kabul.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the attack was carried out by several members of the Islamic State, including a suicide bomber who detonated explosives at the entrance of the hospital. Mujahid said that a car full of explosives outside the hospital also exploded, injuring dozens of people. Several Taliban fighters were killed and wounded in the subsequent gun battle.

The Islamic State Khorasan (also known as ISIS-K) was responsible for the attack a few hours later. Taliban government official Wahidullah Hashimi said that one of the victims was Mawlawi Hamdullah Rahmani, a senior commander in charge of the Taliban’s Kabul Army. He was also one of the first Taliban to enter the presidential palace after the government collapsed in August. Since the Taliban took control of Kabul on August 15, the security situation in Afghanistan has deteriorated significantly.
