The Jinnah tower in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, was in the news recently after members of a right-wing group were thwarted for unfurling the flag over the landmark, which now has three colours. The development follows a controversy that erupted on the occasion of Republic Day on January 26.

“As requested by different groups, we have decided to decorate the tower with three colours. We will also build a pole near it for the hoisting of the national flag. Necessary flag raising arrangements will be made on Thursday,” said Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Said Guntur East MLA Mohammed Musthafa of Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress Party (YSCRP).

Mustafa, who visited the tower on Tuesday to check security arrangements, accused the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to provoke communal conflict. “In the freedom struggle, Muslim elders fought against the British. After gaining independence, some Muslims left the country and settled in Pakistan. However, we want to stay in our country as Indians, and we love our homeland,” the lawmaker said. Go further.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been calling for the tower’s renaming, has again called for it to be renamed. The party’s national secretary, Y Satya Kumar, tweeted: “Painting Jinnata in tricolour still won’t change the colour of your heart, Mr @ysjagan, unfortunately it’s still crescent Green. In accordance with public opinion, changed the name to Zhennata!”

Kumar also described this as the BJP’s victory over “pseudo-secular and anti-national forces”. “The BJP and nationalist forces will not rest until Jinnah’s name is removed and Yashua is also named after Dr Abdul Kalam or Sri Gurram,” he posted.
