Since October 17, at least 24 people have died in Kerala due to flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains. Although the rain weakened by the afternoon of October 18, the authorities remained strictly vigilant against the threat of landslides.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) today issued yellow warnings in 11 areas-severe weather may occur. Weather experts claim that in several places in the Kottayam and Iduki regions, storms may be one of the causes of heavy rains and non-seasonal rainfall.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, and discussed the situation caused by the rain. “Talked to Kerala CM Shri @vijayanpinarayi and discussed the situation after the heavy rains and landslides in Kerala. The authorities are working on the ground to help the injured and affected,” Modi tweeted. Federal Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah (Amit Shah) stated that the center will provide all possible assistance to the people of Kerala who are affected by heavy rains and floods.

IMD said that due to the low pressure area formed in northern Telangana and strong southeast winds from the Bay of Bengal, West Bengal and Odisha may see heavy rainfall before October 20. IMD said that due to the low pressure area, wind speeds on the surface reached 40-50 kilometers per hour, and gusts of 60 kilometers per hour are likely to prevail in the deep seas of the North Bay of Bengal until October 19.

In Odisha State, which has already experienced a wet period, the state government reminded the regional authorities to pay close attention to the situation. Some areas in the southern part of the state, including Howrah, Hougli and East Medinepur, have recently been flooded due to heavy downpours and river flooding. On Monday, IMD predicted heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Sundergarh, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jajpur.
