Since NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars, it has been capturing beautiful views of Earth. More recently, it is believed to have clicked on the Martian rainbow. While it looks like the rover just touched down on Earth just a few days ago, it will be celebrating its first birthday.

The Perseverance rover will touch down on Earth on February 18, 2021. Since then, it has been clicking pictures and sending them to Earth every day. Perseverance shared photos of Mars’ unique rock formations, mountains, eerie sunrises, and more.

The most recent photo of the rainbow was taken with Perseverance’s right rear hazard camera and acquired by NASA on January 9 (Sol 316) at 14:54. The picture shows the yellow sky of the planet, the endless sandy fields and the large sand dunes in the distance. It also shows rainbows similar to what we see on Earth.

Unfortunately, what you see above is not a rainbow. Instead, it’s just a simple lens flare for Perseverance cameras. This happened from time to time when Perseverance photographed the Red Planet. It sets up its lens, the sun reflects its light just right, and a flare like the one above appears.

Rainbows are real on Mars

Rainbows are impossible on Mars. Rainbows are the result of light reflecting off water droplets on the ground. Because of the severe water shortage on Mars, the chemicals just didn’t work like a rainbow.
