Actress Madhuri Dixit made her OTT debut last week on Netflix’s The Fame Game. The show casts her as a Bollywood superstar, which Madhuri also knows very well in real life. Madhuri has appeared in more than 80 films in his 38 year old career. Because of her star status in India, it’s not easy for her to be truly independent.

Madhuri said in a new interview that her parents will accompany her to film sets in India. Her team of nearly 20 people is also always by her side, so doing her own work is never a thing. However, things changed when she met her husband, a postdoc. Sriram Nene emigrated to the United States.

She told Bazaar: “I grew up in a very protected environment…my parents were with me all the time, even when I was working. But once I got married, I started to do it for myself. Make decisions. I learned a lot about living in America. When I was in India, I was always looked after by about 20 people, but there I was very independent.”

“I have to do things by myself and raise my kids – of course, my mum and mother-in-law are there to help me when I need it. But as you get older you mature and learn a lot, based on your experience Growing as a person. Today, when I play a role, I use those experiences,” she added.

In another recent interview, Madhuri told Etimes how her mother would make her do her own work. “I mean, even when I was working in films, my mom used to scold me if my room was messed up and things like that. So that’s how I was brought up. And that’s how I am. When I go home, everything is back in the studio. I see my kids and I see my husband and it’s just a different life. I never really lost myself.”

Madhuri and Sriram were married in 1999 and have two sons together.
