Every year, Mahalaya (Mahalaya 2020) is celebrated on the Amavasya Tithi of Ashwini month i.e. on all Pitra Amavasya. This year, the festival of Mahalaya is being celebrated on 17 September. At the same time, it is the last day of Pitru Paksha and according to Hindu calendar, a Mahalaya Amavasya is starting today. It is known as all Pitru Amavasya, Pitru Visarjani Amavasya and Mokshadayini Amavasya. However, after the end of Mahalaya Amavasya this time, Sharadiya Navratri will be able to begin.
Bengali people eagerly wait for Mahalaya. Actually Mahalaya is considered to be the beginning of Durga Puja and the end of Pitrupaksha. On this day, people pray to the goddess Durga to come to the earth. Although Mahalaya comes seven days before Durga Puja, this year due to one more month, it will come a month later i.e. on October 17. Therefore, the festival of worship of Goddess Durga will be celebrated from October 17 to October 25 this year.
It is said that on the very day of Mahalaya Amavasya, Mother Durga appeared and she liberated this earth from sinners. Also, it is mentioned in the scriptures that the ancestors whose death date is not known to the people, those ancestors are performed on the day of Himalaya Amavasya.
This time due to malmaas month, Navratri will not start on the next day of Pitrupaksha and will come after a month. This coincidence happened 19 years ago in 2001. In such a year, Navratri will celebrate from 17 October till 25 October. This year Dussehra will be celebrated on 25 October.
