“She may also publish the names of the mayors of the four civic associations that TMC has won,” said a TMC leader who asked not to be named.

Banerjee formed the 20-member committee last week after disbanding the previous agency amid rumours of a “one-man-one-post” policy. The party passed the policy last year. The prime minister’s nephew, Abhishek Banerjee, supports the policy.

The new working committee includes former federal ministers Yashwant Sinha, Amit Mitra and Abhishek Banerjee, who was appointed as TMC state secretary in June 2021. Abhishek Banerjee’s post was disbanded along with the previous job council.

Congressmen Derek O’Brien and Saugata Roy are prominent names in the new agency. The 2017 panel included Suvendu Adhikari, who later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Since returning to power for the third time in Bangladesh last summer, the TMC has positioned itself as a national force capable of countering the BJP. Abhishek Banerjee is leading TMC’s expansion into other states.

TMC won elections this week for the Bidhannagar, Siliguri, Asansol and Chandannagar civic associations. It won the Siliguri Municipal Corporation for the first time.
