Shah Rukh Khan is a star that director Mani Ratnam claims he encounters frequently, but working with him again would require the perfect material. They previously collaborated on Dil Se. Along with Shah Rukh, it also starred Manisha Koirala and Preity Zinta.

The movie, which Mani Ratnam co-produced with the directors Ram Gopal Varma and Shekhar Kapur, was released in 1998. The film, which was made against the backdrop of the Assamese insurgency, won multiple accolades, including two National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards. Additionally, it received praise at international film festivals and enjoyed a profitable run in theatres.

When asked if he and Shah Rukh might work with again, Mani Ratnam responded, “You should ask Shah Rukh. When I have a script ready for him, I can approach him. Thus, everything is a result of a script. We simply met at a gathering, that’s all. Like I’m saying, a script’s idea is what drives it. I’ll go and question Shah Rukh once you have a sense of who will be correct.
