IMPHAL: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Manipur on Tuesday for a massive rally ahead of the February 28 first phase of voting in this year’s general election.
Assam minister Ashok Singhal, who is the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s state election in-charge, said PM Modi’s visit will be a morale booster for the party. “It will be the most vibrant political rally,” said Singhal, adding that the BJP government has earned goodwill from the people of the northeastern state and it will reflect in the poll results.
Singhal said he was confident the party would win more than 40 seats in the 60-member parliament.
BJP leader A Sharda Devi said they would return to power with an absolute majority and the prime minister’s visit would send a credible message to the people. “It will definitely encourage and strengthen the party.”
In 2017, Congress became the largest single party in the state with 28 seats. But the 21-seat BJP formed a government with the support of the National People’s Party and the Naga Popular Front.
Security was tightened ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit after a coordinating committee of the outlawed underground called for a boycott and closure of them until the prime minister left.
The second phase of the election is scheduled for March 5, with vote counting to take place on March 10.
