Manipur polls: ECI approves postal ballots for militants in ‘designated camps’

IMPHAL: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has informed that members of the militant group in Manipur have signed a Suspension of Operation (SoO) and Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government and are currently stationed in designated camps on the upcoming February 27 and March 3 Voting by post (PB) in parliamentary elections held in two phases.

“The decision was taken after exercising the powers conferred by Section 60(c) of the Representation of the People Act 1951 and in consultation with the central government,” the Manipur Chief Electoral Officer’s Office said in a release. Friday night.

The decision was made considering that some people belonging to SoO and MoU groups residing in 14 designated camps in Manipur have been registered in the voter rolls of various parliamentary constituencies in the state.

The ECI has directed that these voters should be allowed to vote by mail, taking into account their right to vote, as they cannot leave the designated camps above.

“The notice further mentions that there should be an investigation into the appropriate location of the Postal Voting Facilitation Center (PBFC) to distribute, record, and collect PBs across the different camps of the SoO and MoU groups,” the release said.
