A magisterial court in Dominica has rejected the bail plea of fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi. This petition was filed in the case of Choksi illegally entering Dominica.
On this Choksi’s lawyers have argued that he is not a citizen of India as Article 9 of the Indian Constitution states that any person who acquires citizenship of a foreign country, his Indian citizenship is automatically revoked. The High Court will resume the hearing of the case on Thursday.
Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal said, “We will now move the higher court. Choksi has now been sent to the hospital for treatment under police protection.”
Mehul Choksi mysteriously went missing from Antigua and Barbuda on 23 May. After this, he was detained for illegally entering the neighboring country of Dominica.
There have also been reports that during this time his alleged girlfriend was also present with him. Choksi had been living there since 2018 with the citizenship of Antigua.
However, Choksi’s wife Preeti said that the woman being questioned was not his girlfriend. She said the woman knew Choksi and used to go for a walk with him.
She said Choksi was kidnapped by people who looked like Indians and Antigans when he had gone to meet the woman.
