Meta, formerly known as Facebook, disclosed for the first time the widespread bullying and harassment on its platform on Tuesday, saying that for every 10,000 page views on the website in the third quarter, the number of views of such content was between 14 and 15 times. The company recently changed its name to Meta and also stated in its quarterly content review report that in every 10,000 content views on Instagram, bullying and harassing content occurred between 5 and 6 times.
The social media giant has long been censoring its handling of service abuse. After a former employee and whistleblower Frances Haugen leaked internal documents, the social media giant has been receiving attention, including concerns about Instagram’s treatment of teenagers. Research and discussion on the impact of mental health and Meta’s platform have sparked disagreements. Haogen said the documents show that the company chooses profit rather than user safety. Meta disputed this description, saying the files were used to portray “false pictures.”
These documents were originally reported by The Wall Street Journal, which triggered calls for more transparency in Meta and raised questions about whether indicators such as prevalence rates have a comprehensive understanding of how the company handles abuse.
Meta stated that its bullying and harassment data only captures situations where the company does not need additional information (such as user reports) to determine whether the content violates the rules. They stated that Meta broke its bullying and harassment rules out of the 9.2 million pieces of content the company deleted, proactively discovering 59.4%.
“Bullying and harassment is a unique challenge and one of the most complex issues that need to be addressed because the environment is critical,” said Antigo Davis, the company’s global security director, and Amit Bhattacharyya, product management director, in an article Said in the blog post.
