The International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday that in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, more than 700 members of its community are still at risk. In September, the President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach stated that all Afghan Tokyo Olympic athletes and two athletes hoping to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics have left the country.
After the new Taliban government overthrew the US-backed government on August 15, it began work in Afghanistan earlier last month. The International Olympic Committee said: “They are mainly women and girls engaged in sports, as well as people who support them and promote women’s participation in sports.” “With regard to these members of the Afghan Olympic Community, the International Olympic Committee is continuing to provide assistance in two different ways. “First, it is doing everything it can to evacuate them to a safe country.
“Secondly, the International Olympic Committee was informed that some people who had to stay are suffering from a humanitarian crisis in the country’s food and clothing supply. “On these two matters, the National Olympic Committee of Qatar provided logistical cooperation in the distribution of transportation and humanitarian assistance in Kabul,” it added.
