Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be the first speaker in the lower house on Wednesday to discuss a motion to thank the president for his speech at the start of the ongoing budget session in parliament.
Harish Dwivedi of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will introduce the motion in the lower house. BJP’s Geeta alias Chandraprabha will do the same in Rajya Sabha.
The debate on the thank-you motion will be held for 12 hours in Rajya Sabha while the coalition budget will be held for 11 hours. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to respond on February 8 and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 11.
On Monday, President Ram Nath Kovind laid out the government’s achievements in the Covid-19 crisis, particularly steps taken to fight the pandemic and help farmers and women, in a speech to a joint bicameral session.
The president’s speech at the start of a budget meeting typically highlights the administration’s achievements over the past year and outlines goals and plans for the future.
