According to people familiar with the situation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting searches at multiple residences and offices of Congress leader Karti Chidambaram. In connection with a new case against the Congress MP, searches are being conducted in nine locations in Mumbai, Chennai, Odisha, Punjab, and Karnataka.
According to the people cited above, Chidambaram is accused of receiving illegal gratification of Rs. 50 lakh for facilitating visas for some Chinese nationals to work on a project in Punjab. Karti and others helped Chinese nationals obtain approximately 260 visas.

Chidambaram has been charged in the INX Media money laundering case and is facing multiple corruption charges. In February 2018, the CBI arrested him, and in March 2018, he was granted bail in the case.
