Mumbai Metro with 10 lines being built to serve Mumbai

The 10-line Mumbai Metro is an urban mass rapid transit system (MRTS) being built to serve Mumbai, the capital and largest city of Maharashtra.

Its development has been entrusted to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which came out with a master plan of 146.5 km with multiple lines in 2004. Due to various issues that range from policy paralysis (EPC vs PPP, Metro Rail vs Monorail) to environmental issues, MMRDA has so far been able to develop only 1 metro line in the suburbs connecting Versova – Andheri East – Ghatkopar.

In 2015, a new 118 km master plan was approved and the then government provided much-needed impetus for the development of 2 lines: Dahisar East – Andheri East (Red Line) and Dahisar East – DN Nagar (Yellow Line). Apart from Cuffe Parade – BKC – Aarey Colony (Aqua Line).
