Mayor Kishori Pednekar said on Tuesday that Mumbai will be unlocked by the end of February as Covid-19 totals drop across the country, news agency ANI reported. “We’ve made up our minds,” she added, while emphasizing not to show laxity in adhering to Covid protocols.

“People have to wear masks and practice social distancing,” Pednekar also said.

Given the surge in new cases, the city is gradually easing coronavirus restrictions after imposing them last month. On February 1, the government lifted the curfew and allowed restaurants, theaters to operate at 50% capacity as they did before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Beaches, gardens and parks are also allowed to open at 50% capacity.

The government also allows swimming pools and water parks with similar capacity restrictions. “Local tourist attractions will be open at normal times. Weekly markets will be open at normal times,” the revised order said.

The order further requires all places to strictly abide by Covid-related conduct and any other rules imposed by the state.

Mumbai recorded 10,50,811 total cases on Monday, including 730. The death toll stands at 16,666, according to the state health department.
