Soon after the announcement of the National Cabinet, Nafjot Singh Sidhu unexpectedly announced his resignation as chairman of the Punjab State Congress. In a letter he shared with Congress Chairman Sonia Gandhi on Twitter, he wrote that he must not compromise on Punjab’s future and national welfare agenda. Sidhu took over as chairman of the party in a dispute with Amarinder Singh’s leadership in July, who stepped down as chief minister 10 days ago while accusing the party’s top commander of humiliating him. The politician, who is a cricketer, did not elaborate on the reasons for his withdrawal. In his letter to Sonia Gandhi, he said: “The breakdown of a person’s character stems from a corner of compromise. I can never compromise on Punjab’s future and Punjab’s welfare agenda.” “Therefore, I resign from my post as Chairman of the Punjab State Congress Committee. I will continue to serve the Congress,” he wrote. It is not clear what prompted Siddu to leave the post of chairman of the Punjab state parliament. Sidu’s resignation also sparked speculation about the politician’s next move. He worked for the People’s Party before joining Congress. On Sunday, troubles started brewing. Just a few hours before the new minister was sworn in, some provincial councillors wrote to Sidhu saying that the “contaminated” Rana Gurjeet Singh should not be appointed. As a minister because he faces accusations of corruption in the sand mining industry. In fact, Gurjeet Singh was removed from the cabinet by then Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on corruption charges. The resignation a few months before the Punjab election shocked the congressional leadership. Congressman MLA Bawa Henry told ANI Sidhu on Tuesday night that Sidhu’s resignation has not been accepted and the matter will be resolved soon. He responded quickly to ensure that he would not become the chief minister. In an interview with the “India Express”, Amarind said that Sidul resigned within two months of taking over as chairman of the CPPCC, demonstrating his “cunning” character once again. “I have known this boy since I was a kid. He has always been a lonely person and will never be a team player,” Amarind recalled the experience of Sidhu who suddenly left the Indian team in England in 1996. “This is his true character,” he added. Amarinder laughed at Sidhu for claiming that he was withdrawing on a matter of principle. He told India Express, “What principle is he talking about? He is just providing reasons for withdrawing from Congress. You will wait and see that he will soon join forces with other parties.” In a tweet earlier on Tuesday, Amarinde wrote: “I told you… he is not a stable person and is not suitable for the border of Punjab.”
