It was time for the end of March, when the second wave of Covid-19 was gaining momentum in India, when the managing committees of two mosques in Lucknow-Jama Masjid, Lalbagh, and Jama Masjid, Kapurthala-convened a meeting.
The members of the committees had spoken to the doctors about the changing situation, and expressed their willingness to help deal with it. It was decided that from the first week of April, these mosques will provide oxygen cylinders and concentrators to the people or whatever other things are needed to deal with the epidemic. It was decided that one important figure would be kept in mind during all their efforts.
In Lucknow, 71 per cent of the population is Hindu, and under no circumstances should the aid of mosques be limited to Muslims. This is what mosques have made their basic mantra.
The mosques have claimed to have helped over 500 families in the city in the past three months, of whom over 60 per cent were Hindus.
Jama Masjid Lalbagh Committee President Junoon Nomani said, ‘We saw that there was hardly anyone among close and close acquaintances who had not been infected with the virus. We called a meeting at the end of March and after consulting the doctors, prepared a plan to help the people.
“Hindus constitute 70-75 per cent of the population here, so we directed all the people working here to ensure that no Hindu brother returns home without help,” he said. Since then no Hindu has returned empty handed from here.
Mohammad Azhar of the Kapurthala Jama Masjid Committee also made a similar claim and said that ‘out of the 500 families we have helped, more than 60 percent are Hindus’.
