NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met a 31-member Sikh delegation at his New Delhi residence on Friday, two days before the Punjab elections.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa claimed the meeting had nothing to do with the general election. He added that they met Modi to thank him for his initiatives for the community. “We have addressed some of the problems facing Sikhs and Modi has promised to address them.”

Sirsa said they discussed quotas for Sikhs in Jammu and Kashmir and restoring benefits for those who left the army after Operation Blue Star in 1984 to fight militants hiding in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. He added that they also discussed opening corridors for Sikh pilgrims to visit Guru Nanak’s final resting place in Pakistan and support Afghan Sikhs.

“Other parties have failed to deliver on their promises to us since 1947.” He added that the meeting was a step towards resolving their problems. “The prime minister remembers the sacrifices made by the Sikh brothers in the freedom struggle and recognizes their contribution.”

Sirsa shared a video of the meeting and tweeted: “I am honoured to be a representative of prominent Sikh institutions and leaders who met PM @narendramodi Ji for his incredible Sewa and thanks initiative.”
