Indian badminton player PV Sindhu won the country’s third highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan. Sindhu’s name was originally announced on the eve of India’s 71st Republic Day in January 2020.
However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other restrictions imposed to control the outbreak of the pandemic, in-kind grants have been delayed. On Monday, President Ram Nat Covender finally awarded the award to the two-time Olympic medalist.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Federal Minister of the Interior Amit Shah also attended the ceremony. Earlier this year, Sindu won the bronze medal for the second time in a row in the Olympic Games on behalf of India. She won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in August, thus becoming the first Indian female athlete ever to win two Olympic medals.
She won a silver medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics. The 26-year-old from Hyderabad has already won two silver medals and two bronze medals before winning the gold medal at the 2019 Basel World Championships.
In addition to the team gold medal three years ago, she also won the women’s singles silver (2018) and bronze (2014) at the Commonwealth Games. She is also the recipient of other major awards, including Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and Padma Shri, the third highest civilian award in India.
