The statue at fence No. 10 might have messed up a few show jumpers’ hopes of making the final on Wednesday. Housed in the corner of the arena, a sumo tower and rikishi make up one of the Japan-themed fences.
Horsemen have claimed that a statue of a sumo wrestler next to a barrier on the 14-jump Olympic course in Tokyo could distract their horses.
“I noticed that 4-5 horses were on that side,” said British equestrian Harry Charles.
At the same time, Teddy Wallock, the Israeli horseman, said, “The horses … looked distraught after the jump.”
