While back pain has always been a common symptom of viral illnesses, doctors have seen an increase in severe back pain cases in Omicron patients, even after recovery.
According to the CDC analysis, the four most common symptoms of Omicron variants are cough, fatigue, congestion and runny nose. More recently, UK-based Zoe Covid applied research added new symptoms such as nausea and loss of appetite. and taste,” Dr Ann Mary, consultant general practitioner at Amrita Hospital Kochi, told IANS.
“A significant number of these patients have lower back pain and severe myalgia, which exacerbates the patient’s distress,” Mary added.
Omicron is a variant of global interest due to its high transmissibility. Emerging research shows that the Omicron variant causes less damage to the lungs and less severe disease than other variants.
“Myalgia is known to be common in viral infections. Covid is no exception, but even after recovery, we are seeing more cases of back pain with Omicron, which patients label as debilitating,” said Artemis Hospital Respiratory/Pulmonology and Sleep medicine consultant Dr. Arun Chowdary Kotaru told IANS.
However, with limited data on Omicron and the high cost of genetic sequencing, the reason for this is “difficult to explain,” Kotaru said.
First discovered in South Africa and Botswana in late November, Omicron has now been found in more than 100 countries and seven continents, according to the open-access data sharing platform GISAID.
India on Wednesday registered 4,033 Omicron cases from 27 states. Of these, 1,552 have been discharged.
Meanwhile, scientists at the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) at the Indian Ministry of Biotechnology say that the highly transmissible Omicron with three sub-variants BA.1, BA.2 and BA.3 may be replacing the previously dominant The status of Omicron India’s delta pressure has driven the country’s daily Covid case totals.
In the three sub-lineages, the scientists noted the significant presence of BA.1 and BA.2 in genetic testing conducted in the country. In particular BA.1 has been in co-circulation with Delta and replaced it in Maharashtra and several other states. Media reports say that so far, BA.3 has not been detected in the country.
“The speed at which the infection is spreading, it looks like Omicron is replacing other variants in India, such as the Delta variant. So we can say it will be the main variant,” Dr Rahul Pandit, director of intensive care at Fortis Hospital in Mumbai, told IANS.
