Australia suffered its deadliest day of the pandemic on Tuesday, as the fast-moving Omicron outbreak continued to push hospitalizations to record levels, even as daily infections eased slightly.

Australia is dealing with its worst COVID-19 outbreak, fueled by an Omicron variant of the coronavirus that has put more people in hospitals and intensive care units than at any time during the pandemic.

A total of 74 people had died between Australia’s three most populous states, New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, as of late morning, surpassing last Thursday’s national high of 57, official figures showed.

“Today, a very tough day for our state,” NSW Premier Dominic Perot told a media briefing as the state reported 36 deaths, a new pandemic high .

Perrottet, who has been ruling out any drastic restrictions due to high vaccination rates, said hospitals could still cope with rising admissions. “Despite the challenges, they are not unique to the rest of the world,” he said.
