The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition over alleged security lapses during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on Wednesday to vote. The petition, filed by Voice of the Lawyers, will be heard by the Supreme Court on Friday.

Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana has asked petitioners to provide a copy to the Central and Punjab governments today. The prime minister’s rally in Ferozepur had to be canceled yesterday after some protesters blocked a route and forced his motorcade to spend about 20 minutes on the flyover due to an unprecedented breach. After landing at Basinda Airport, Prime Minister Modi was on his way to the National Martyrs Monument in Husseiniwala when the incident occurred. The federal Home Office and BJP have pointed out mistakes by the Punjab police and state government, and claimed that dirty politics is on the show.

“Congress making in Punjab today is a teaser for how the party thinks and operates. The people’s repeated refusal has led them down the road of madness,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah tweeted.

Union Minister Smriti Irani asked if information about the Prime Minister’s route had been leaked.

Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi expressed regret over the incident but rejected the BJP’s allegations. At a news conference, Chaney said his government had no information about the Prime Minister’s motorcade taking the road.

The state government today set up a high-level committee to investigate blunders during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the state.

A spokesman for the Punjab government said the committee would include Justice (retired) Mehtab Singh Gill and chief secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Justice Anurag Verma. The spokesman added that the team had been asked to submit its report within three days.
