Divyanka Tripathi Dahiya’s passion of wheels began during her early years when she learned how to ride a bicycle. The actor says on this World Bicycle Day, “I learned to ride a bike on the hilly slopes of Bhopal in third standard.” My cousin and I had to learn everything by trial and error. I was so ecstatic when I finally got my balance that I fell and wounded myself. My parents taught me my first lesson in life at that point: “girte hain sher sawar hi maidan-e-jung mein.”
The 39-year-old is adamant that her cycling journeys are connected to some of her fondest childhood memories. “My favourite summertime memories are of riding my bike down to my papa’s pharmacy to help him out during the school break.” I used to steal my favourite chocolates from the shelf and, on the one hand, earn compliments from his friends for helping him out. Fortunately, I was discovered early on before I could become skilled in the trade. She beams, “I changed my ways and became my father’s honest assistant so that I wouldn’t be kicked out of the shop and could go on my bike trips.
Dahiya’s bicycle adventures didn’t stop when she was a kid; as an adult, she recalls a very unusual event that happened to her. One day, I was riding my bike home from a filming location. Before I could pull over and gather my breath on a stretch of steeply inclining road, a few fans in automobiles and scooters spotted me. My legs begged for a rest, but I kept pedalling politely, determined to avoid a congestion. I felt like an achiever for very strange reasons that day, when I could not walk due to spasmed thighs,” she says with a smile.
Although Dahiya enjoys riding her bike, she claims that riding is what first made her fall in love with motorcycles. “I am a devoted motorbike rider today because of cycling. “My college years of riding helped me transition to a gear-less bike, which ultimately gave me the courage to learn motorbike riding last year,” she concludes.
