Angered by the government’s stand on Delhi violence, opposition MPs are staging a sit-in in front of the Gandhi statue located inside the Parliament House. Let me tell you that no work has been done in the second phase of the budget session started yet. Daily sessions are postponed due to uproar. But do you know when the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in front of which opposition MPs sit on dharna was started?

In 1993, Lok Sabha Speaker Shivraj Patil decided to install the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament House. After which the sculptor Ram Sutar made a statue of Mahatma Gandhi sitting in a meditative state. The height of which was 16 feet. After the statue was built, the question arose as to which part of the Parliament complex it should be installed. At that time, Shivraj Patil entrusted the responsibility to the Deputy Chairman of the Upper House Najma Heptulla and Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

According to Vijay Trivedi’s book (I will not give up), it was decided to place the idol exactly in front of gate number one, but Vajpayee did not like that place. Actually, Vajpayee believed that the place is not right according to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.

In such a situation, Vajpayee’s point was again taken into consideration and a place was made for the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and the wall was prepared in D-Shape by demolishing the old wall. Explain that the statue was unveiled on 2 October 1993 by the then President Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma.
