The opposition leader held a protest under the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the parliament building on Wednesday, demanding that the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha members be lifted.
Members of Congress who participated in the agitation included Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Malikajun Harger, Sougata Roy and Mohua Moitra of the Trinamool Congress, and Sena Congressman Priyanka Chaturvedi.
“We demand that the suspension of 12 members of Rajya Sabha’s opposition party be lifted. We will hold a meeting and decide on the course of action in the future,” Harger said.
Twelve members of the opposition party were suspended for allegedly causing riots on the last day of the monsoon meeting.
The suspension came after Federal Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahad Joshi wrote to Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday, who was also the Vice President regarding alleged violence on the last day of the monsoon meeting and seeking action against “discipline violations”. The suspended MPs include six MPs – Phulo Devi Netam, Chhaya Verma, R Bora, Rajamani Patel, Syed Nasir Hussain and Akhilesh Prasad Singh – Dola Sen and Shanta Chhetri of TMC, Shiv Sena and Priyanka Chaturvedi of CPM and Elamaram Kareem and Binoy Viswam of Anil Desai CPI.
