The Assam government said the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) vaccine is not mandatory for the state’s population, but those unwilling to be vaccinated should stay at home.

Those who are unwilling to be vaccinated against Covid-19 will not be allowed into offices, restaurants and meetings, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a news conference in Guwahati on Monday.

“People who are unwilling to be vaccinated can stay at home. In Assam, Covid-19 vaccination certificates must be presented if necessary. We cannot allow anti-public work to happen,” Himanta Biswa Sarma told reporters.

Last week, Assam’s chief minister said people who were not fully vaccinated would be banned from public places from January 16.

Authorities have so far administered more than 40 million doses of the vaccine to eligible beneficiaries in Assam, including 203,392 doses on Monday.
