French police use tear gas in the face of demonstrators, screenshot from a video during the ‘Liberty Motorcade’ (Liberty Motorcade), a motorcade protesting the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) vaccine and restrictions in Paris, France, February 2022 12th of May.
On Saturday, Paris police fired tear gas and issued hundreds of tickets to disperse motorcades trying to block traffic in protest against coronavirus restrictions and the rising cost of living.
Thousands of demonstrators from across France traveled to Paris in what they called a “freedom convoy” of cars, trucks and vans, inspired by the closure of truck drivers in Canada’s capital, Ottawa.

Police who banned the protests moved quickly to try to clear vehicles at the city’s entrances and issued fines for participating in unauthorized protests.

But more than 100 cars managed to gather on the Champs-Élysées, and police used tear gas to disperse protesters in a scene reminiscent of the “yellow vest” anti-government riots of 2018-2019.

Among those arrested in Paris was Jerome Rodrigues, one of the main figures of the “yellow vest” protests and a supporter of the motorcade, a police source said.

Interior Minister Gerard Darmanin tweeted that police arrested 54 protesters in Paris and issued 337 fines.
