Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress candidate Shubhdeep Singh, known as Sidhu Moosewala, were charged with violating electoral laws in Mansa district on Friday, the last day of Sunday’s general election campaign.
Both were spotted on the campaign trail after the 6 p.m. campaign deadline on Friday.
The case was registered at the City-1 Mansa Police Station under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (Disobedience by Officials).
Channi arrived in Mansa on Friday night for a door-to-door campaign in Moosewala.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate from Mansa, Dr. Vijay Singla lodged a complaint with election observer CK Yadav, in which he said Congress leaders’ campaigns after the peak of the campaign violated the code of best conduct.
Following a spot check by the Flying Squad (FST), electoral authorities determined that Channi was not a Mansa voter and had violated the electoral code for running in any other constituency.
Moosewala ran a campaign with more than 400 supporters over the allowed limit, read the FIR.
In another incident, a Congress candidate was booked by Mansas Sardulgarh Bikram Singh Mofar on Friday for holding a roadshow without permission.
Jhunir Police Station registered an FIR against Mofar under IPC Sections 188 and 171-F (Improper Influence or Impersonation in Elections).
