Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, State Unit President Navjot Singh Sidhu and Rajya Sabha MP Partap Singh Bajwa have been included in the first list of congressional candidates for the February 14 Punjab election announced on Saturday.
The CM will defend his current ministry, Chamkaur Sahib, and has only been nominated from one seat, in talks he may be asked to run against Doaba for greater electoral influence.
State unit chief Navjot Sidhu will run in his current contest in the eastern district of Amritsar, while Bajwa will be the candidate for the Qadian parliamentary constituency in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha district.
Partap Bajwa’s brother Fateh Jung, the current MLA from Qadian, defected to the BJP after Congress decided to send Partap Bajwa from Qadian.
Deputy Chief Minister Om Prakash Soni will run in the current seat of Amritsar Central.
The candidates fielded today include Sandeep Jakhar, nephew of Sunil Jakhar, the Punjab Assembly campaign chief from Abohar; Mohit Mohindra, son of Patiala Rural minister Brahm Mohindra, Malavika Sood, Moga actor Sonu Sood and sister of Mansa singer Sidhu Moosewala.
