For humanitarian reasons, Indian Railways employs nearly 2,800 employees who are close relatives of employees who died of Covid-19 while working during the pandemic.

The Ministry of Railways said on Wednesday that the young children of the deceased will be hired when they reach the age of 18. Since March 2020, Indian Railways has lost 3,256 employees at all levels and departments working in stations, tracks and workshops due to Covid-19. Within four months, 87% of their family members were employed by the railway.

In most cases, the task is undertaken by the son or wife. In some other cases, spouses request that their work be suspended until they complete their continuing education and are eligible for higher-level positions.
