While IITs have traditionally dominated when it comes to creating startup founders, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Rajasthan, Pilani has become another fertile ground in recent years, The Economic Times reports.
Notable startups founded by BITS alumni (one or more) include Unicorns like bigbasket.com, Swiggy, and Groww, India, and others like Cleartax, redBus, MPL, Pratilipi, Postman, Daily Ninja, and Vymo.
Funds raised by startups led by BITS Pilani alumni grew from $ 55 million in 2010 to $ 1.57 billion in 2021, according to data from Tracxn.
What is behind the success of the institute?
- Students gain practical experience by performing tasks such as obtaining food deals and deciding on menus.
- A flexible attendance policy (not required), the option to earn a dual degree, and a long-term internship with a company to help develop industry connections.
- Flexibility to choose a course instead of a structured program.
- A strong and cohesive alumni network that helps fund both college projects and early startup ventures.
- Initiatives such as on-campus incubators and business plan competitions.
