Russia-Ukraine war crisis live: Ukrainian military intelligence says a Russian general has been killed in the battle for Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, which Russian forces have been trying to capture since the invasion began. Russia on Tuesday proposed a limited ceasefire on certain routes for humanitarian action starting at 10am Moscow time (12:30pm IST) after previous attempts to impose a ceasefire failed.

The move comes as India told the UN Security Council that the council was “deeply concerned” by the failure of a safe corridor for Indian students stranded in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy, despite repeated calls from Russia and Ukraine. “India has been calling for an immediate cessation of all hostilities,” said India’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
