Russian defence ministry announced a ceasefire Saturday to let Mariupol residents evacuate. The city’s mayor had earlier said that strategic Ukrainian port city had been ‘blockaded’ by Russian forces. As fighting continued, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticised NATO for refusing to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine.

Around 500 Indians have been waiting outside Kharkiv, with many students stranded at Pisochyn. The Indian Embassy in Ukraine said that a “vast majority” have been evacuated and that efforts are ongoing. A special flight carrying 229 Indians from Ukraine arrived in Delhi early Saturday.

Russia’s attack on Ukraine has created over 1 million refugees, a barrage of sanctions and fears of a global economic hit and conflict in the West. Russia blocked Facebook and some other websites on Friday and passed a law that gave Moscow stronger powers to crack down on independent journalism. The BBC, Bloomberg and other foreign media have suspended reporting in the country.
