Nawazuddin Siddiqui recently joined the list of Bollywood stars with a bungalow in Mumbai. The actor, who spent three years designing and building his new palace bungalow, recently talked about how different it is from his previous home in the city.
Nawazuddin had been trying to break into Bollywood for more than a decade before his big hit with Gangs of Wasseypur in 2012. During this time, the actor lived in several small apartments, often huddled with other aspiring actors. In a recent interview, Nawazuddin compared the two.
“Aaj jitna bada mera personal bath hai, utnasa mera ghar hua karta tha (today my bathroom is as big as the house I used to live in),” Nawazuddin said in an interview with the Bombay Times. When I moved to Mumbai I lived in a very small place when I was with four other aspiring actors. Woh kamra itna chhota tha ki agar main door kholu toh kisi ke pairon mein lag jata tha (this room is too small if you Open the door and someone’s feet will be hit) because when we sleep there we all have our beds on the floor. Dheere dheere (slowly, slowly) I started sharing my room with three people and then It’s two people, I didn’t live alone until 2005.”
Nawazuddin named the bungalow after his father Nawab. The actor shared that he wished his father would see his big house in Mumbai, but it didn’t. He said: Unka mann Mumbai ke ghar mein nahi lagta tha (he doesn’t like apartments in Mumbai). So I kept thinking that one day I would take him to something bigger in Mumbai, but he died before that. I wish my father could see this bungalow. “
Nawazuddin’s new home is in Versova. The essence of the bungalow is said to have been inspired by his home in his hometown of Budana in Uttar Pradesh. The bungalow and adjacent fence are painted pure white, and the outdoor areas are lined with trees.
In a recent interview with The Hindustan Times, Nawazuddin was open about his decision to build the house. “To be honest, I didn’t mean to have a new house. Ghar hona chahiye – iss concept mein mera believe hi nahi tha (I don’t believe in the concept that one should have a house). Someone showed me the plot, so I guess we don’t Hurt it. It happens all the time,” he said.
