Saoli Mitra, eminent theatre personality, actress dies at 73

Shaoli Mitra, a well-known theatrical figure and daughter of legendary actors Sombhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra, died of a heart attack at her South Kolkata residence on Sunday.

Mitra, 73, a talented actor, director and playwright, died at her residence in South Kolkata at 3.40pm and was subsequently cremated at Siriti crematorium, without much fanfare, her death said close friend and theatre celebrity Arpita Ghosh.

Ghosh said she had been suffering from a heart-related condition but refused to be hospitalized and her condition worsened on Sunday.

Ghosh said the famous actress wished to be cremated without any fanfare when she made her last wish to her close friend and showed a copy of her last wish.

Mitra, who won Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2003, Padma Shri in 2009 and Banga Bibhusan in 2012, will be remembered by her fans and critics for her solo performance as Draupadi in “Naathvati Anaathbat” (she also wrote the director) , and played Sita in “Sitakatha” or Bitata Bitangso. After working for many years in the famous troupe “Bahurupi” founded by Sambhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra, who immortalized the role of Amal in Tagore’s “Dakghar”, “Shaoli founded “Pacham Baidik” by introducing the acclaimed female liberation The repertoire created a precedent.

Drama celebrity Bibhas Chakraborty recalls his years of association with Shaori, beginning with her in Bohurupee when she was younger. “She was sick for many years, but never knew she would leave us so early,” Chakraborty said.

Posukhamar director Ghosh recalls how she became Shaoli’s biological daughter and how she avoided any publicity about her condition.

Drama celebrity Rudraprasad Sengupta said Shaoli has been out of the public eye for some time due to illness, but her performance has captivated audiences over the years.
