Real-time market updates: Major benchmarks remain stuck at their lows for the day amid continued selling pressure in financial stocks, mostly private institutions. The BSE Sensex was down more than 1,000 points, down around 55,200 points, while the NSE Nifty50 index fell below the 16,500 mark, down nearly 300 points.
Companies such as HDFC Twins and ICICI Bank fell nearly 500 points on the BSE 20 share index. Asian Paints and Maruti were other big losers, down about 4.5% each.
However, the broader market continued to outperform. The BSE MidCap was down just 0.1%, the SmallCap index was up 0.2%, while the BSE Sensex lost 1.8%.
By sector, BSE Bankex fell 3%. Auto, telecom and real estate indices were other big losers. On the upside, the metals index rose 4.4%. Oil & Gas and Electricity indexes each rose 1%.
