Jailed gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari’s son Abbas Ansari filed his nomination papers on Monday as a candidate of the Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party (SBSP), an allay of the Samajwadi Party, from the Mau Sadar assembly seat in eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Mao will vote for the seventh and final stage on March 7.
Mukhtar Ansari, currently held in Banda Prison, is a 5-term MLA who has represented the Mau Sadar seat since 1996.
“My father Mukhtar Ansari is Mau Sadar’s five-time MLA. He will not run. It is the son’s responsibility to carry on his father’s legacy. Mao is my Karma Bumi and I will carry on my father’s political legacy. I will spare no effort ,” Ansari said, accusing the BJP-led government of keeping his father in jail “unconstitutionally”.
“He (Mukhtar) has handed over his legacy to his son… Now Abbas will be involved in electoral politics,” said Daroga Singh, Mukhtar’s lawyer.
Abbas ran in Ghosi’s 2017 parliamentary election as a BSP candidate and came second behind BJP’s Fagu Chauhan.
