Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk said in a tweet on Thursday that he is in talks with airlines to install Starlink, a satellite-based broadband service owned by his rocket company SpaceX.
Musk, known for his Twitter jokes, announcements, and active interactions with fans, did not provide any details about the meeting in his tweet. It is not yet clear which airlines will be contacted or when it will be installed. Inflight Internet provider Gogo Inc’s stock price fell to an intraday low of 5.7%, and then recovered some of its lost ground in afternoon trading.
Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet division, plans to deploy 12,000 satellites. SpaceX has stated that the Starlink constellation will cost about $10 billion. It is one of an increasing number of companies making small satellites, including Amazon’s Kuiper, Britain’s OneWeb, venture-backed Planet, and Raytheon’s Blue Canyon Technologies.
The companies currently in charge of Musk include electric car manufacturer Tesla Inc., rocket startup SpaceX and Neuralink, a startup that is developing ultra-high bandwidth brain-computer interfaces to connect human brains to computers.
