What We Watched, an engagement report released by Netflix on Thursday, lists the most popular shows and films from July to December of 2023 in the second half of the previous year. The Railway Men and Jaane Jaan, starring Kareena Kapoor, are two of the most watched Indian films. Globally, the Indian titles accumulated more than one billion views.
Indian films most frequently seen
The highest views for a Netflix India movie were reportedly attained by Sujoy Ghosh’s crime thriller Jaane Jaan. It received 20.2 million views worldwide and was placed 83rd among the most watched titles worldwide. Along with streaming talents Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat, the movie marked Kareena Kapoor’s OTT debut.
Atlee’s action thriller Jawan, with 16.2 million views and a ranking of 120th, follows Jaane Jaan. A few days after being the top grossing Indian film of the year at the box office, it was made available on Netflix India. Alongside Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara, Shah Rukh Khan appeared in Jawan.
The spy thriller Khufiya, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, was his first film to be released on an OTT channel. Among the actors in it were Tabu, Ali Fazal, and Wamiqa Gabbi. Despite getting mediocre reviews, the movie debuted at number 194 and amassed 12.1 million views worldwide.
Next, with 11.5 million views, at position 218 on the list, was Amit Rai’s courtroom drama OMG 2. Starring with Pankaj Tripathi, Yami Gautam, and Akshay Kumar, the movie was centred around the issue of sex education in schools. After collecting ₹221 crore at the global box office, it was released on Netflix India.
The anthology Lust Stories 2, which included short films helmed by R Balki, Konkona Sen Sharma, Sujoy Ghosh, and Amit R Sharma, came out after OMG 2. Neena Gupta, Mrunal Thakur, Angad Bedi, Tillotama Shome, Amruta Subhash, Tamannaah Bhatia, Vijay Varma, Kajol, and Kumud Mishra comprised the ensemble cast. Out of all of them, Konkona’s segment The Mirror got the most appreciation. Lust Stories 2 ranked 312th with 9.2 million views.
The comedy Dream Girl 2, starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Ananya Panday, was directed by Raaj Shaandilyaa and came next. Dream Girl 2, the follow-up to the 2019 smash hit, made ₹140 crore at the global box office. With 8.2 million views after its premiere on Netflix India, it came in at 361st place. Curry & Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph case, a true crime documentary, was the final title listed in the report’s top 400.

Shiv Rawail’s period drama, which was influenced by the Bhopal Gas Tragedy, was the most watched Netflix India Original series worldwide in the second half of last year. Among the actors that starred were Juhi Chawla, R Madhavan, Babil Khan, and Kay Kay Menon. 10.6 million views brought the miniseries to the 139th position at the end. Kohrra, a crime thriller directed by Sudip Sharma and starring Suvinder Vicky, Barun Sobti, and Harleen Sethi, came next. It received 6.4 million views and was ranked 267th.
Raj & DK’s historical comedy series Guns & Gulaabs were the other two Indian shows in the top 400. With 6.4 million views, Guns & Gulaabs tied Kohrra for 267th place. The ensemble cast included Rajkummar Rao, Dulquer Salmaan, Adarsh Gourav, Gulshan Devaiah, and the late Satish Kaushik.
The last show on the list was Kaala Paani, a survival drama hosted by Sameer Saxena and featuring Vikas Kumar, Mona Singh, Ashutosh Gowariker, and other actors. Kaala Paani received 5.8 million views, good for 307th place.
