The government has told the Parliament that it has not imposed curbs on any news media in Jammu and Kashmir. The West Bengal lawmaker sought to know whether the government is aware of the recently-released Press Council of India’s fact-finding committee report on news media in Jammu and Kashmir.
A committee studying the state of the media in Jammu & Kashmir has found that news media in the region is “slowly being choked” by restrictions imposed by the local administration. The committee submitted its report to the Press Council of India on March 8.
Journalists in Jammu and Kashmir have not reported harassment by the authorities since 2017, says minister of state for home affairs Devendra Thakur. The ministry of home affairs has informed that there have been no instances of any harassment to the media persons since 2017.
The head of the Federal Crime Complaints Commission (FCFCC) has said that “no person, regardless of profession or otherwise, who is found to be involved in any activity that poses threat to the security and sovereignty of the country” can be prosecuted.
