Every year February 18th is Thumb Appreciation Day to celebrate the value of our thumbs. A very useful body part without which it would be nearly impossible to grasp things, pick up small objects, eat with one hand and do many other things more easily.
This holiday means we take notice of our thumb and give it the love and attention it deserves, as it is so important to the functioning of our hands and our lives. It’s designed to encourage everyone to spread love and express gratitude for their thumb, which medical experts believe is one of the body parts that sets us apart from other animals.
Our thumbs are the reason we can operate heavy tools to help us develop the earth’s resources. To further reiterate the importance of the thumb, all medical professionals agree that when we lose a finger, the index finger is the best finger we lose.
The human thumb is made up of two bones and is often referred to as the “opposite thumb” because they can stretch relative to the other fingers to make things easier to grasp. They are known for coordinated movements like sliding, twisting and bending, all of which help with everyday needs like writing an essay, turning a nut, picking up a coin or buttoning a shirt.
