Tinnitus Awareness Week: For many people with tinnitus, a constant ringing or buzzing in the ear is a major cause of distress. So much so that they cannot sleep, relax and function properly. Not surprisingly, they are at risk for mental health problems such as anxiety and depression. Tinnitus Awareness Week will run from February 7-13 to spread awareness of this distressing ear condition.
Recent statistics show that more than 10% to 20% of the global population is affected by tinnitus. Worryingly, the number of people affected by the disease is increasing at an alarming rate, and the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation.
Persistent tinnitus can affect a patient’s quality of life, interfering with sleep, hearing, concentration, and mood.
Also known as “tinnitus,” tinnitus can be described as the perception of sound in the absence of external noise. Some reported hearing whistles, buzzing, hissing, whooshing, and in some cases music. But why does it happen?
