Karnataka education minister BC Nagesh says references to Mysore ruler “based on imagination” will be removed. If any proof is available for Tipu Sultan’s title, it will be retained, but glorification part of his reign will be scrapped.
The removal of lessons on Tipu Sultan from school textbooks is a “figment of somebody’s imagination”, Education Minister Nagesh has said. He added only the content with documentary and historical proof will be prescribed for schools in India.
Chakrathirtha committee recommends removing chapters on Tipu Sultan from textbooks. The Hindu right-wing accuses him of proselytization and killing Hindus. The committee was tasked with revising the Class 6 to 10 social science textbooks for India’s secondary schools.
The Bharatiya Janata Party ended the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan. The previous Congress government introduced the celebrations in 2015. The government dropped a chapter on him as part of its exercise to cut around 30% of the syllabus of Class 7 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
