Saluting the spirit of para sportspersons, the opening ceremony of the 16th Paralympic Games began on Tuesday with the message of moving ahead amid the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Paralympic Games are being held again in Tokyo after 57 years, making the Japanese capital the first city to host the Games twice.
The ‘Para Airport (airport)-like the stage was set up for the ceremony as a symbol of diversity and inclusion. The celebrations began with a video depicting the power of Para players.
At the end of the video, a colorful program was presented in ‘Para Airport’s dress-like personnel, which was followed by a spectacular view of fireworks over the stadium.
Earlier, International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons and Emperor Naruhito of Japan were welcomed into the stadium, followed by six people carrying the Japanese flag, including four-time Olympic freestyle wrestling champion Kaori Iko and defense activist Takumi Astani.
