Twitter Inc. has reportedly suspended more than 300 accounts promoting Philippine presidential front-runner Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. for violating its policies on platform manipulation and spam.
Most of those social media accounts were removed as part of a routine operation before news site Rappler reported on Twitter supporting Marcos, the company said. It added that an investigation into the matter is ongoing.
“As the Philippine general election takes place in May this year, we remain vigilant about identifying and dismantling suspicious information activity directed at election conversations,” a Twitter spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
Marcos, who led last month’s survey of presidential preferences, dominated the Internet. Independent fact-checker VERA Files said he benefited the most from election-related disinformation last year.
“While it is true that hundreds of Twitter accounts may have been suspended, it is not certain that all of them belong to Bombong Marcos supporters,” his spokesman, Vic Rodriguez, said in a statement. The dictator’s son said he didn’t use online trolls or grow his social media pages.
