The United Arab Emirates on Monday intercepted and destroyed two Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at the Gulf state without causing casualties, following a deadly attack a week ago, the UAE’s defence ministry said.
The Houthis have been battling a Saudi-led coalition that includes the UAE for six years, carrying out multiple cross-border missile and drone strikes against Saudi Arabia and launching an unprecedented attack on the UAE on Jan. 17.
“The remnants of the intercepted ballistic missiles fell in different areas around Abu Dhabi,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that it was taking the necessary protective measures against all attacks.
Monday’s attack was the second in the UAE since it struck a fuel depot in the capital Abu Dhabi last week, killing three people and setting a fire near its international airport.
The Houthi-run Al Masirah TV channel said the group would announce details of “extensive military operations” against Saudi Arabia and the UAE within hours.
Late Sunday, Saudi state media said a Houthi ballistic missile fell in the south of the country, injuring two foreigners and damaging workshops and vehicles in an industrial area.
The Saudi-led coalition has stepped up airstrikes against Houthi targets in Yemen.
At least 60 people were killed on Friday in a strike at a temporary detention center in the northern province of Sa’ada, and about 20 were killed in an operation in the Houthi-controlled capital Sanaa on Tuesday.
