The University Grants Council (UGC) has asked higher education institutions to participate in Surya Namaskar on Republic Day.
The National Sports Federation of India plans to hold the event as part of the government’s ongoing Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav campaign to mark the 75th anniversary of India’s independence.
“In memory of Amrit Mohostav, the federation has decided to launch a Surya Namaskar project involving 30,000 colleges and 300,000 students in 30 states from January 1 to February 7, involving 30,000 colleges and 300,000 students, in 30 states. Performance of the musical Surya Namaskar in front of Tricolor on March 26. . . . All higher education institutions and affiliated colleges are requested to participate in this event,” the committee said in the notification.
The committee asked agencies to promote the event through wide publicity.
In another circular, the committee cited the University and College Republic Day Standard Operating Procedures (SoP) and recommended activities such as plays, debates, quizzes and classroom projects on topics such as India’s freedom struggle, valor and victory . UGC said the events could be organised in physical or virtual form depending on the Covid-19 situation.
“All higher education institutions and their affiliated colleges are required to follow the SoP developed by the Department of Defense in order to instill our best practices across the country, while celebrating the upcoming Republic Day celebrations and beyond,” the committee said.
